Germaine Greer, a brass band, umbrellas and Amelia Earhart. This mixed bunch are somehow connected to Mixcloud 6. Read on...
Here are the connections.
The Pop In The Real World Alphabet reaches 'F' for the Feminist Forefront. Germaine Greer might question why an apparent member of the patriarchy feels qualified to cover feminism. I don't, but some music from feminist bands is so thrilling and good it can't be overlooked.
The in depth look this week is at the use of brass in pop. It's a sound that can convey a whole gamut of emotions as exploited by many bands from The Housemartins to Teardrop Explodes.
One of the best songs I've heard in recent months is by a new band The Umbrellas. We'll also be playing something from Public Service Broadcasting whose latest album 'The Last Flight' is all about Amelia Earhart's ill fated attempt to circumnavigate the globe by air.
As always there will be some classic songs, forgotten songs, new to you songs and current favourites. It's going to be a blast!
